It's a cover. However, it is a showcase for the nuclear reactor that is Ann Wilson's voice. Also noteworthy, it is LIVE, and she probably wasn't anywhere near the county line of sober.
The really incredible thing about it is this : You would never expect this out of Ann. Die hards have heard this. But others never have. Just note what happens about 2/3 of the way through. Especially singers. You think she has completely exhausted herself. She is winded. She lets this vibrato riff fly and it sounds like she has completely taxed her chest voice. A normal human being would have.
Not the ANN. She hints at her head voice earlier in the song. And then when you think she can't possible let fly with any more passion and emotion, stand the f*ck back. Most people have some light, silly little falsetto head voice.
We're not talking about most people. This is mind blowing. The trills and scales usually annoy me. The girls who do it now do it with zero emotion, no thought, too much structure, and no rock and roll. It's all showing off. This woman sounds as if she didn't sing this, she may well explode. She goes from a growl, to a shriek, to a mini aria in about 30 seconds. Behold, the wonder that is her voice :

This is outrageous! I don't dislike this song, but I think of it as a snoozer, and I usually tune out when it comes on. She completely rewrote this song for me.
Somehow she mangages to sound like she is ripping up her cords one minute, and then she comes out with these beautiful, pure tones. And she has done this for decades!
I was listening to "Dreamboat Annie" the other day, and I was surprised to remember how mellow and sweet her voice could sound, and then I spent the day with "Crazy On You" and I was blown away by the unhinged power in her voice, and now this amazing track.
I say Karen Carpenter + Janis Joplin + Patti Labelle + WTF? = Ann Wilson

a sidenote: when I looked at your post I was reviewing tracks from tonight's band rehearsal, and I was thinking "say, these tracks are getting pretty good, Eliza, your voice sounding pretty decent." Then I downloaded the "Unchained Melody" and I can't listen to anything else tonight. Thank you.
I think.
No, really thank you for sharing it!
