No. No, it wouldn't be better. Not for me, anyway. Would you feel better if your lover ditched you for a chick rather than a boy? Maybe you would, I don't know. But I'd rather Mark leave me for a chick when he leaves.
I'll understand if she's hot & nice, but if she's bitchier, fatter and uglier than me, then I'll be pissed.
I have not read this entire 28 page thread, so sorry if I repeat.
I finally saw the movie. With my sisters-in-law at one of their homes. No boys around. I thought it was a very good movie - the more I think about it, I think it was a great movie. Don't know if it's one I'll be watching over & over again like Mask or Terms of Endearment, but I liked it.
The biggest thing that struck me was there was only 1 gay sex scene in the entire movie, and they got that "out of the way" in the first 20 minutes. Almost like Ang Lee (or the writers, I don't know) knew that the gay sex would be a big deal for many & they didn't want that to be the point of the movie. Focus on the love story rather than the men buttf*cking.
Seriously, though. There were more hetero sex scenes than homo ones. And I thought that was a great decision. Like Sparky said, this is a LOVE story, not a gay story.
The sex scene did...I can't find the word. Shock me? Surprise me? Scare me? Not sure. It was so sudden, and violent, and primal, and urgent. It all happened so fast & was over just as fast & that was it.
Now. The kiss is another story.
I did NOT see that scene coming, I thought sure they'd chat a little & then take off after he met Ennis' fam. It was so passionate and necessary, I thought it was great.
I knew nothing of the ending, so that threw me for a loop too. When I saw the card said "deceased" I thought that maybe the wife wanted to cut contact & lied & sent the card back. I must say if they didn't do that quick flash sequence showing the beating, I would never have thought it was anything other than the accident she claimed. That's how naive & stupid I am.
And I think her dad did set it up. Remember when Jack & his wife were at dinner with that other couple, and later outside the guy mentioned they should get a cabin & go fishing some weekend (wink wink)? Well, I think that between that & the little trips to Mexico, someone found out & wifey ran to daddy. He had never liked Jack anyway, and he was not about to have anyone knowing that his precious daughter's husband was a faggot, so he offed him. Sickening.
Ennis is so lonely now.
Yeah, he's not a real person. Whatever. I'm sad for him anyway.
A few random thoughts:
*Giggling when we thought about Ennis' name - way too close to penis or anus. Teehee.
*Heath Ledger was unbelievable. I'm not a fan, but I don't dislike the guy. But he was outstanding in this.
*They kept talking about these hunting & fishing trips with some booty on the side like it was a normal thing that all men do. I guess I know what all the boys in my life are really doing, huh?
*Theresa - I am extremely impressed that your son actually went. I agree his inital comment was a normal hetero teen boy comment, trying to be cool or whatever. But the fact that he stayed throught the entire flick without giggling, or leaving, or complaining, and then saying it was pretty good? Wow. That's a great mature kid you have.
