I know most fans don't go running up to at top speed shouting "STEVIE, STEVIE, OH MY GOD STEEE-viie" at the top of their lungs while drawing . . . SOME-thing . . . out of their pockets (a pen? a gun?
in Madonna's case it was a knife) - but still - there's a line that's hard to see sometimes, and there's VERY little time to make a decision.
I'll take a bitchy person 8 days a week, twice on Sunday, if it will help to assure Stevie's safety. My only gripe, personally, would be if somebody got physically hurt due to a bodyguard over-reacting and jumping the gun. I couldn't imagine that happening, but it wouldn't shock me, either. But overall, I'd simply prefer that she be safe - and she's not. Not to be grim; I'm just saying, try to see it from their point-of-view, and from Stevie's. What is a big huge thrill for a fan, screaming "STEVIE STEVIE I'm your NUMBER-ONE FAN i just LOVE your MUSIC WHAT is THE TOWER ABOUT OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M FINALLY MEETING YOU!!!" - it's the ten thousandth time Stevie's heard it. Don't get me wrong, I know most fans don't act that way - but again, try to see it from their point-of-view - it's "a matter of degree" and sometimes it's unclear what the situation really is. Anyway, that's the way I see it, personally.
They actually did a very good job of satirizing this on Saturday Night Live, in a skit with Sting - I thought it was really funny, actually!
I'll share another one with you thats really scary. I used to know this guy who worked local security for major bands that came to Minneapolis and during the Dance tour when they came here, his job was to answer fan mail to make sure there wasnt any funny stuff in any of the letters. Well, he tol me that this one guy sent Stevie a pair of I'll call it DNA stained underwear along with a letter saying what he wented to do. I'm more than certain there's more where that came from sadly.
