I went to school with her neice and she used to tell me about how Oprah would send cards or things, but never any money or things they needed (and they needed lots) and then the next day there'd be a big write up where she gave $10K to a local school in our area for books.
Of course, you must consider the source and I don't know the whole story, but I found it odd.
