I know what you mean. I did the same thing when I got my scanner.
I'd start with any high resolution pictures you have since those should be of the best quality. The picture from my avatar is high resolution. That's the first one that I did.
I use a black & white ink cartridge(because of the ridiculous price of color ink) so I mainly printed out black & white photos. I got prints made of the color pictures, thanks to someone else here on the Ledge.
