These things are enjoyable to the extent that 1) you are interested in the real-life people or events being fictionalized, & 2) the writer is good. My favorite roman à clef is a novel called "Curtains" by Michael Korda, which depicts in a fictionalized account the West End actors of the 1940s & 1950s -- the Mayfair crowd of Shakespeareans at the Old Vic, iincluding the Oliviers, Gielgud, the Richardsons, the Redgraves, the Quayles, &c.
