I didn't like them before last year, either. And i've only seen two of the movies, including the recent one.
My point is - who cares?
I never did.
I would call the books inferior to, say, the Narnia series, and the Wrinkle in Time series - at least.
But if you like to read, you'll find the books good fun (simple, but fun - easy light reading.)
I can't really comment much on the movies.
But don't feel left out. I was the same for years. I urge you, if you want, to read one of the books. If you don't like it, then fine. If you do, great. It's not like it's hard, complicated reading.
Then at least you'll know what the fuss is about and can judge for yourself (which is why I read the books).
