Wasn't that awful? What he did, of course, was to bring out all the potentially worst aspects of it & bring them right to the surface, while burying or obliterating all the best aspects of the original.
A cover like that just makes me seriously question the "understanding" a singer has of his or her material.
Which is weird for Elton John, of course, because he has built a career on, among other things, having a keen vocal stylist understanding of the song -- as Robert Hilburn has rightly noted. But his main problem with his "Don't Stop" cover is a conceptual problem -- one directly related to production ideas being based on a misconception.
