Sure there is a difference, an open letter is written with the intent that it will be shared with a large audience. I'm not sure what you are suggesting though? Do you think she inteded the letter to be an open letter when she wrote it? If you say that you would still have warm fuzzies if George Bush wrote it, I'll take your word for it, but I think that most people would be more willing to be critical of him for the same letter than they would be for Stevie. I also think that it's human nature to be more accepting of people we are fond of when they falter, but I think we should be aware, even if just a little, of when we do it.
This post is in no way a plug for GW either, but I wanted to pick someone who was generally unpopular around here.
