They hit you with everything but the ****ing prices. It was a group of about 20-25 people that they had recruited right off the street (they're as persistent and forceful as Nazis). They gave us a tour of part of the Church and then took us into a room where they showed one of their ridiculous videos. They pleaded with people who were trying to leave to stay. I mean, pleaded with them. When it was all over, you're left with a few people who are either buying into the bull**** or, like me, were just interested in the absolute craziness of it all. The shrine to Hubbard is what really pushed the entire ordeal over the top, which says a lot because the "personality test" that they administer is horrifying. Anyone who dared bring up the cost of the classes was stared down and when I asked how many classes I might need to get the help I needed (this was aftert he test

), they told me that I'd probably qualify for the majority of them and that I should definitely take them all if I wanted to lead a life of joy and fulfillment. They rarely went into details because they didn't want many questions to be asked. I didn't dare give them my actual phone number or address, I just made them up.
When I ended up writing the article for the UMASS paper (that was why I had gone there in the first place), I got a good number of borderline threatening emails and letters addressed to the school paper offices. I'll have to dig them out, they're in the same box as Dianetics and all the other ****.
