May I just also add in here that stacking plates at the table is NEVER appropriate. I cannot stand that and think it is gross, esp. when it splatters. When waiters do it at a find dining establishment, I call them on it. I also hate when people actually touch the food they are eating with their fingers (save for hamburgers and the like) as well as when they push the plate away from them when they are done. You are NEVER to touch the plate in a fine dining setting. That is what the waiter is for and the waiter should NEVER stack
