Liquid's review was right on. The show started at 7:30 but was supposed to start at 7:00 according to the box office. TM really screwed up and 8:00 was posted on the actual tickets so alot of people were late. Henley's set was terrific. I'm not a big fan of his but the songs he sang were well chosen and the audience loved them. He did Desperado (it was an audience sing-a-long LOL) and the End of Innocence, restoring the original set. He also came back out for a solo encore. I don't know the name of the song, but his fans all sang along and it had a great R&R sound to It. Henley's band was EXCELLENT, very tight. You can tell he must be a perfectionist! Too bad he didn't introduce them. He seems kind of stiff, not the kind of guy you would want to bring to a party, the exact opposite of Stevie!
Stevie came out for Hotel California and thunder struck...the place went wild!!! Not only has she regained her youthful figure but she was so full of energy. I would love to know how she did that in such a short time (last I saw her was in September). Her voice was powerful. I had front row seats on the side/front of the stage one riser up so I could really see on stage and just off-stage. Stevie was early for an intro and as she stood off to the side of the stage she did a little dance to the beat of the music. Once her set was over I saw Stevie off to the side of the stage hugging Jana and Sharon like happy school girls.
It's hard to say what the highlights of the show were because all the songs were unbelievable. I loved the high kick during Standback. Beauty and the Beast was very emotional. She wore her hair up and a black velvet cape with a high stand up collar. She looked regal. Circle Dance was exceptional. Stevie and Don should record and release this one. Stevie introduced it as one of her favorites and said it was written by Bonnie Riat about her (Bonnie's) father and she asked Don to do it with her. Their performance almost brought me to tears.
During EO17 the audience tried their hardest to get to the stage. Security was very tight. They let the first row dance in front of their seats but not approach the stage. Guards were posted at the aisles along with a cop. A little much...were they going to shoot anyone who got through?!? I watched numerous Stevie fans plead to get through to the stage only to be sent back to their seats. However there is no stopping all those determined fans and as some pleaded with security others took advantage of the distraction and made it to the stage. Soon the guards had no choice but to be overwhelmed by the front couple of rows! Stevie looked like she loved every minute of it. The stage was high and she really had to bend over to shake hands. She had her own security guy squatting next to her making sure she didn't get pulled off the stage and drown in that sea of love!
The encore duets were fantastic. They finished with So You Want to Be a R&R Star. I know this isn't a Stevie or Henley song but this one rocked the house.
OK OK I know I'm getting long winded, but you asked for details.
From my vantage point I could see off stage, Carlos Rios sat and watched all of Henley's set. He was joined off stage by most of Stevie's band including Jana and Sharon during the duets that Stevie sang on with Don in his set. They looked like a little family as they watched Stevie perform. Stevie introduced her band during her set and had a little something to say about everyone. She introduced Waddy as the man in her life which I think made everyone wonder! She also said he was her music director. He was all over the stage behind her during her performances keeping the music with the individual band members. In all honesty her band was not as together as Don's but before you throw anything at me, let me say that individually they were great. Taku did several great solo intros with her new drummer and the keyboard guy was exceptional on Beauty and the Beast. The band just seemed to need moe practice together? I don't know, but maybe it was in contrast to Henley's remarkable band. Stevie introduced Carlos as her dear friend who knew her when she was really down and helped bring her up. She called Sharon "Sharona" and said that she asked Sharon to be in a "little solo band many years ago" and she has been with her ever since. She introduced Jana as the one who shares the love, or something like that...endearing. She had nice things to say about each one during their introductions, which was in direct contrast to the lack of anything from Henley on his band.
Did I say that Stevie was radiant? That is the most memorable thing to me about this concert. She was powerful, energetic and HAPPY! She smiled big contageous smiles all evening. She smiled at the audience and when she turned around to air guitar or air drum with her band she smiled at them. She went back stage after each couple of songs to change...which cracked me up...she's such a girlie girl! During the encores she wore that black and beige dress from the Vegas show with a biege shawl. She looked beautiful dressed in something other than black.
Don't miss this show. Don Henley did a great job and you will enjoy his music. Stevie looked like a woman having a love affair and the love affair was definately with her audience!
