Well, that's what my choir teacher always said in high school. Learn how to sing well (or as well as you're capable of singing) and control your voice, then you can play around like Mariah Carey, who can do it all. My choir teacher, who was pretty rigid about the "right way" to do things, admired Mariah quite a bit.

Oh I think she can sing, don't get me wrong. But I think she can sing like every other diva out there so it really doesn't do anything for me, ya know? I like unique voices, not necessarily "the best" singers. I mean, Neil Young is one of my top ten favorite vocalists of all time if that tells you anything
. I like a voice that moves me. I like voices that are less than perfect with some character, not people who sound like they've been training for a million years (not that there's anything wrong with that fundamentally).
