My belief is BATB is mostly about Stevie trying to better understand herself by reflecting on past experiences. Her bad experience with Mick hit home very hard upon the heels of a few other experiences/relationships. That led her to a deeper understanding of herself and to feel some compassion for the misunderstood beast she hurt and likely felt she understood but did not know how to help until it was too late.
