ABOUT Mick. I'd be very interested to read that. Forget liner notes that say FOR Mick or any quote about inspiration. I'm sure she got inspiration from Mick after being dumped by him and feeling betrayed when he hooked up with her good friend. If there's a quote where she states, unequivocally, Mick is the beautiful beast or that Mick is the person she refers to in the song, I'll get on board with everyone who thinks everything Stevie says about her songs is complete literal truth. I showed you what she talked about in being touched by the story of BATB, according to her own description in the '81 RS interview. None of the things she talked about in that interview is relatable to what we know about Mick's personality or character traits, or about the dynamics of their relationship. I showed you several posts from different people who noted in detail the S&L relationship in terms directly relatable to BATB as she described to RS. Some of the same people who posted observations about S&L's incompatibility and the captor/captive dynamic to their lifestyle when they lived together still believe Mick is the beast in the song?
Stevie's actually the beast in the final analysis, but throughout the song she sings to and about a misunderstood beast that kept a girl prisoner out of love and then finally gave her a chance to get away and return by choice once she understood the totality and nature of his awkwardly expressed love. If Stevie had never said one word about that song, and you only had to go by the story itself, would it make sense to insist Mick is the other person she's singing to/about? OK, some people believe his looks are the issue that indicate he is a beast. That's very shallow of Stevie, if true, but I wonder how anyone can honestly believe she'd refer to someone as a beast because of their looks. My belief is BATB is mostly about Stevie trying to better understand herself by reflecting on past experiences. Her bad experience with Mick hit home very hard upon the heels of a few other experiences/relationships. That led her to a deeper understanding of herself and to feel some compassion for the misunderstood beast she hurt and likely felt she understood but did not know how to help until it was too late.
