I don't know about that really. The Bella Donna era version (the fast one, I'm assuming it's with Tom Petty) sounds a lot like the Gypsy we know and love. Lindsey, it seems to me, slowed the song down and added little flourishes here and there (which I totally admit brings it alive). He's a great producer and arranger and that's what they do.
I would compare Gypsy to Blondie's Heart Of Glass. The original version of that song is more of a reggae tune and much faster. Mike Chapman, the producer, wanted to turn it into a disco tune. It's still a Harry/Stein composition though.
