I thought he actually claimed they "appeared" as in over night. I don't think he had them yet when he first became famous. This marriage is some bizarre pairing.
Edit: Oh I see, he had Lupus as a teen. I guess he still has it but it is in remission. I just thought that at one time I read/heard that he claimed they were of a supernatural source and have thought him extremely odd ever since. Maybe that never happened?
