The use of "husband" was meant in short-hand. I could have just as easily said "mate," "spouse," "longtime companion," "partner" (a term that I personally loathe because it makes your relationship sound like a business arrangement), etc.

Ironically, many gay men are so preoccupied with identifying each other in terms of whether we're a "top" or "bottom"... which in and of itself is a labelling process to determine one's dominance or submissiveness... that "husband" and "wife" doesn't seem any worse in terms of relationship dynamics.
