Don't know what type of film you're really looking for, but The Unknown with Joan Crawford and Lon Chaney from 1927 is one of my favorites. It's written and directed by Todd Browning, the guy who made Freaks, and only runs for about an hour. I would imagine Metropolis is too long for a class and it's hard to find a real quality copy.
