It's hard to explain why some bad movies are entertaining while others just suck. I love all these movies.
Robot Monster (The worst movie ever made, as far as I can tell -- the "Mime of Love" scene is one I will take to my grave)
Voyage Into Space (a CLASSIC piece of **** -- do you remember little schoolboy Johnny Sokko, in his shorts & suspenders, who commands Giant Robot to beat up the bad guys by speaking into his watch?)
The Incredible Mr. Limpet (Loved it as a child & still do -- it's perfect for newfangled postmodern interpretations)
Babes in Toyland (Disney junk but I love it)
Million Dollar Legs (Probably the worst movie W.C. Fields ever made, but still a hoot -- although you laugh at it as often as you laugh with it)
It's Pat (One of the damnedest things I've ever seen)
Another Man's Poison (Bette Davis & Co. on the English moors)
Slightly Scarlet (Noir with plenty of howlers)
The Poseidon Adventure/The Towering Inferno/Earthquake (Watching people die in large numbers is very amusing in a typical Irwin Allen production)
War of the Gargantua (My personal pick of the men-in-rubber-suits-attack-Tokyo genre. This one features a camp classic moment: Sophisticated lounge singer aboard a cruise ship singing "The Words Get Stuck in My Throat," only to be gobbled up seconds later by the sea monster, which spits out her clothes after consuming her flesh)
Detour (A noir classic, & a damned fun movie to watch; but it's baaad . . . it's like a spoof of a parody of a pastiche of noir conventions)
All Fall Down (More post-Freudian stuff from William Inge)
Valley of the Dolls (Vapid & hysterical, this mess has something to do with pill-popping young women who claw their way to the top of the entertainment profession, only to plummet back to Earth in a fireball. There are scenes of supreme, howlingly painful badness that will live forever)
National Lampoon's Senior Trip (unfortunately, less fun than a lot of the other stupendously bad movies, but Rob Moore shines)
Splendor in the Grass (Freudian camp about adolescents who don't get enough sex & who subsequently go insane -- as one critic said, "the old corn, fermented in a new way")
Naked Gun, etc.
Plan 9 from Outer Space (nicely representative of Ed Wood's oeuvre)
The Thief of Baghdad (Steve Reeves version)
Balalaika (Nelson Eddy in a flop operetta -- best howler number is "Ride, Cossack, Ride")
The Star (Great Bette Davis tantrum -- Sterling Hayden gets it this time)
Beyond the Forest (Bette Davis, sweating from pent-up sexuality, swings her hips around & growls "What a dump!")
Naughty Marietta (Entertaining atrocity with Jeanette Macdonald & Nelson Eddy -- when those two profiles come together singing "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life," it's peerless)
Isle of the Dead (Val Lewton at low -- very low -- ebb)
