The New Year's Eve tale is a great story but I thought it was a little more involved than a NYE phone call. The way they tell it now isn't what I heard years ago. I heard Keith and Mick talked first and then Mick talked to Lindsey at the recording studio. I don't remember if Stevie was there. I think she was. I don't know if that was the first time the package deal was discussed but Mick was told at some point that he would need to take Stevie to get Lindsey in the band. At the recording studio he felt them out on what they were doing and then after talking to Keith again about having to hire both, and also running it by John and Chris, Mick called them at home and asked them both to join. This happened across more than one day at the end of '74. Lindsey didn't really want to join and Stevie did ($$$). They still had the Birmingham, Alabama gig to do as BN but they decided to join. Everyone got together and made it "official" at a New Years Eve party thirty years ago on 12/31/74. It sounds cooler to say Mick called on NYE. He probably did, but that was not their first contact.
