Just wanted to add that I, too, love "Sugar Daddy."
It's a great song... fun to listen to, fun to sing along with. It's a "smile-inducer."
In my mind, Christine really can't write a bad song. My "least favorite" of all of her tunes would be "One More Night"... but even that one isn't a song I'd ever say I "hate."
In regards to "When I See You Again," I've always felt... as I have said in the past... that the repetition of the line "what's the matter, baby" is important in conveying the feelings of longing, despondency and ennui (and that tiny,
tiny glimmer of hope), that I imagine Stevie must have been feeling at that point in her life. Everytime she says that line, it takes the listener deeper into her psyche. Sometimes it's a question her former lover is asking her, sometimes it's a question she's asking herself... sometimes it's a question that she knows she has no way of ever honestly answering, and sometimes it's a touching example of concern from her past lover that she's still desperately needing to cling to.
I also feel that fragile, hoarse whisper (ah-ha! Stevie's the Hoarse Whisperer!
) that she sings it with, is so in-tune with the emotionality of the song that it would not have had the same effect if she had recorded it a few years prior or a few years later.
Funny that some of the parts I love the most about it, are the most reviled parts of the whole song! Ah well.
Ok, Tynan... for you, I repeated some of why I have the utmost love for "When I See You Again."
