I know people go insane over the what's the matter babies but each one is different and I think that was absolutely done on purpose. Stevie was very vulnerable at that time in her life and having someone care (even though the relationship in the song was clearly coming to some kind of end) and show concern in some way was something she could hang on to. She knew she would emerge from this as a changed person and wondered where the relationship would be in the future.
And when Lindsey comes in at the end, it just tears my heart out. I don't care if it was set up for maximum soap-opera-esque appeal.
It's a beautiful song and probably in my Stevie top 15 list.
