Paging John McVie
SoundExchange, which collects royalties for songs played on satellite, Internet and cable TV radio, is searching for more than 30,000 artists it has checks for (totalling $1 million) -- including
Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie, Collective Soul, and Ginuwine.
The company has collected $15 million this year and expects $35 million in 2005. "For older artists, they either don't have management or no one knows how to reach them," says John Simson, its executive director.
And sometimes -- as in the case of McVie -- publishing companies lose track of artists, no matter how well-known. "It's important we get in touch because moving forward, these checks will be much larger," he says.
