I think the barking sounds we're debating over are just the guitar part during the chorus. It's very plucky, and if you stretch your imagination a little it can be confused for a short bark. I was never sure if it was a guitar or actually a distorted cowbell...

Anyways - I'm torn with what they tried to do with the live version. I think Lindsey really wanted to play it live, because I remember him saying he thought it was a hell of a song in one of the bootlegs. But the harmonizing totally carries the studio version. That's why I love it - it's so soft and complicated vocally, yet very simple in its entirety. For a live version, they needed extra (the "WHY DON'T YA..." and "WHYDON'TYOUCOMEONAND..."s) which really made it awkward. In the bootleg I have, Lindsey does a fun solo at the end which works pretty well. But I think that with how well they pulled off "Everywhere" on the Dance, they could have given an equally good performance of "Hold Me".
