I know a good deal abot Lee Atwater--he was from South Carolina too. For those of you who don't know or can't remember or who need a little memory refreshing---he was a political consultant and Republican strategist whose greatest success came in the 1998 presidental campaign--anyone remember the Willie Horton ads which helped (in part) to defeat Dukakis? For his efforts, he was named head of the RNC.
Atwater was the inventor of the politics of personal destruction.
And Karl Rove is perhaps his greatest disciple. Karl Rove first met Atwater when Atwater ran his campaign to be elected national head of the College Republicans. And who was Atwater's official minder during the 1988 election? Shrubbie himself.
What Rove needs to remember--and apparently doesn't, is that Atwater spent his final days calling people he'd destroyed to beg for their forgiveness. I can't think of a worse way to spend my final days than that but I can't think of anyone who deserved to pay more than Atwater--except for Rove and his merry band of Swift Boat Liars for Bush.
