"SMAP" is Lindsey's attempt to make music in the singer-songwriter formula, without the usual "excessive" arranging. It's a formula he rarely gets into. The song speaks of depression like "When I See You Again", but then again not the kind of depression that you seem to identify with. "Don't know why I have to work, don't know why I can't play". It's a very passive statement, it speaks of mornings when you just can't be bothered to get ouf of bed. And yet there's a glimmer of hope coming through it, like in "When I See You Again".

It's not that I can't identify with it, or anything like that. I think we can
all identify with the desire to play instead of working, and I think we can all identify with the need to have our "place" in the world.
The song just doesn't do anything for me.
It's not even a case like "Say Goodbye," where I LOVE the lyrics, but I'm not crazy about the album arrangement (I am, however, completely in love with the 'Live In Boston' performance). I'm unable to find anything to like about "Save Me A Place," even though I want to, and even though I've tried.

I think I can be allowed
one song to have a deep dislike for.
Even others that I've cited as "least favorites," are not songs I have a deep distaste for. They're just songs I like less than others.
But with "Save Me A Place".... well, let's just say I won't be joining its appreciation society any time soon.
What boggles my mind, is that "Save Me A Place" is so often put ahead of "That's All For Everyone"... which, in my opinion, is one of Lindsey's all-time best songs. Certainly one of his shining moments on 'Tusk.'
I listen to that song in total bliss.
