That studio alternative was the live arrangement since they began playing the song. You can hear it that way on tapes of shows from 1976 (like Milwaukee & Cincinnati), 1977 (tour rehearsals & all shows) & later. They probably just wanted to elongate the song in concert, & that arrangement adds an extra minute or so.
