John Stewart was the opening act. Stevie didn't join him for "Gold," by the way, which was silly. He played a lot of his "Bombs Away, Dream Babies" songs, he had a Turner electric, & I remember him saying that Stevie was going to fly in on her broomstick or something.

When she played "Gold & Braid," it was quite a buzz. We didn't know what it was. We didn't even know who wrote it. I figured it was some old Motown-type song that she was covering. I think it was the only time I've ever heard Stevie perform something absolutely brand new to the audience. We knew "I Need to Know" even though she was playing it for the first time -- everybody knew Petty's songs. That was a major buzz, too, hearing her rip into that on the first night. The crowd cheered, but they seem to have edited a lot of that noisy reaction out of the video.

It seems to me that the home video version was mixed a bit differently than the original HBO broadcast. When I bought the video a few years ago, I was kind of puzzled at the relative lack of audience noise.

I seem to recall the original credits for the show listed the song as "Golden Braid" instead of "Gold & Braid", as well.

I saw John Stewart & band at the now non-existent Golden Bear in Huntington Beach right when Dream Babies Go Hollywood came out. At the time, he was the only person other than Lindsey who I'd seen play a Turner Model 1. The really weird thing was that he didn't have a bass player...his keyboard player played the bass parts on an old Mini-Moog which sounded kind of odd to my ears at the time. John had a small refrigerator sized rack of effects...which didn't work 3/4 of the time...his roadie would have to come out between what seemed like every song to mess with the rack to get John's guitar to work. (5 minutes between songs was a bit much) Finally, John got pissed off and switched to an acoustic and played the rest of his set "unplugged". The roadie DID finally get the gear working for John's last song, "Midnight Wind"...after all that, the 10 or 15 of us left in the audience (there were only 20 or 30 to begin with...THAT was really weird) got John to come back for an encore...a solo acoustic version of "Daydream Believer"...we all sang along with the "Cheer up, Sleepy Jean" parts
