As I was reading this article by Douglas Wolk, I saw that he put his finger on something, but it was probably inadvertent. He pointed out that "Butter Cookie (Keep Me There)" sounds nothing like "The Chain." Uh, d'uh! How come none of the fans seems to care about that? The DVD-Audio of "Rumours" contained a track called "Keep Me There," which was obviously an early snapshot of "The Chain," & bandmembers talked about how "The Chain" started as something by Christine called "Keep Me There." The link made sense, except for the fact that an instrumental had a title: Why would Christine title a song for which she hadn't yet written lyrics? That's not her m.o.
Now there's
another, totally unrelated piece of song on this Rhino reissue titled "Butter Cookie (Keep Me There)," & it has nothing to do with "The Chain." I trust the labeling on these projects less & less these days. The DVD-A wasn't totally accurate in its labeling anyway: the instrument list was off here & there on the video graphic portion.
I think one of these -- either "Keep Me There" on the DVD-A or "Butter Cookie (Keep Me There)" -- isn't actually "Keep Me There." If they both are, then there's a huge piece of the story that could have & should have been revealed.
Also, who are all the players on the "For Duster" jam on the Rhino? You've got more people than just four Fleetwood Macsters there.
