The record business men know their stuff. You know how much money they put into their research? They wouldn't bother if it didn't aid their making the most possible money they could make. If a double album made more money, they'd be thrilled to see more double albums. Their goal is to make is much money as they possibly can. And I've never seen a double album/cd the same price around where I live anyways....
