I don't think Stevie self-consciously tries to be anything... she just is what she is, without having to force anything. And I believe that's one of the things so many people respond to.

And whether or not she "gets" editing, this is a case where editing would have been to the detriment of the piece. Forcing it to strictly adhere to all of "the rules," would render it devoid of emotion and style, IMO.

At any rate, and as I've said before: it's pop music... the rules of writing are more relaxed in that framework.
If we can excuse double-negatives, we can excuse switching tenses. Both are equally offensive according to the strict rules of writing.
