I think the last Outkast album shoots down that reasoning. It was a double and cost the exact same as a single disc album. As was Shania Twain's last album. I suspect that the double album could've been released, cost the same, and sold just as well, but that the label poo-pooed the idea because they didn't believe a double album from a veteran act would've done well. And they're wrong; it would've sold the same.
