We should probably save this debate until Sunday (in fact, haven't we had this debate before?), but I have to side with Stevie here.
Now granted, Lindsey is right in regards to the "rules of writing," but those rules are somewhat more fluid in regards to writing rock and roll songs, IMO.
The following wouldn't sound half as good as what Stevie wrote:
"She's shaking his faith in her...
No, he's shaking her faith in everything else.
A decision no one made, and now he's going home.
Faith is a hard thing to hold on to...
Something inside him says, "I don't have to."
He's not like other people, he does what he wants to...
He's not like other people... he does what he wants to."
It just doesn't have the flow of the original lines. And even though she seems to be switching tenses, I think it makes the song somewhat more intriguing, in that it leaves you wondering in places if she's talking about herself, or talking
to someone else.
Anyway, I still feel that if one's going to be hard-nosed about the "rules of writing," then one better follow all of them... which means Lindsey would have to fix the double-negatives in "What's The World Coming To."
