Sentimental Lady is a beautiful song. Thanks to share it, Christine's voice really shines there.
I was reading Bob’s version reached the top ten in 1977. I wonder if it was a hit in 1972, I didn’t find any info except that Bare Trees reached #70 in the US 200 list and #37 in the Australian Ken Music report. So it seems the song didn’t reach a top list, but it’s a beautiful version, and not so different from Bob's. Unlike, for example, Carpenter's Close to You or Tina's What's Love Got to Do with It, which are considerably different (and better) from their original versions (by other singers). In cases like those it's easy to understand why some covers were much more successful than the originals.
No doubt that Lindsey, Christine and Mick being involved in the French Kiss album helped to impulse its reception, but it is curious how different factors (beyond the talent, or the song itself) can help or hinder to get success. The personnel, the release year, being from the same or different country, the positioning/mental perception of a name (which somehow becomes a brand), etc.
Two very different presences on the charts, but if you ask me which version I like more, I can't choose.
