I really, really enjoyed this. Thank you so much for posting. This was recorded in 2012 and its sad that Lindsey said he really wanted to record with Stevie again and guess what? That NEVER happened. Crazy.
The making of Tusk is just as crazy as the album. I totally understand Lindsey's wanting to go in another direction as an artist. However I think he sort of overreacted a bit to Rumours success. Warner Brothers did not run it into the ground and stopped releasing singles after 4. Don't Stop was the last single off the album that went to #1 in Canada and #3 USA and #1 US Cashbox. Today a record company would run that album to the ground and keep releasing singles.
Its funny that Lindsey does not remember many things Ken recalls about making the album although he does not dispute what Ken says. Tusk does have a very odd mix and Ken says that Lindsey would instruct him to turn all the dials in the other direction and then say: FINISHED.
Even though they were all crazy during this time and drug use was rampant this must have been a really fun album to make. The interviewer was very good but I would love to ask Lindsey if he had anything to do with the track listing. Its been debated here for years if he did that or the record company. I've heard Tusk a million times so it flows naturally to me because I know what to expect. But when you first played the album, the tracking is odd. Chris even disappears for 7 songs or something. Was it a coincidence or on purpose the albums most quirky song was next to the most traditional Mac sounding songs?
I guess acoustic punk explains it because I wished the album sounded more punk or like the Clash. It was a moment in time. The biggest band in the world making a double album with all the excesses of the 1970s, their egos, the drugs, etc.
I remember an interview with Chris many years ago where she stated the band gave great latitude to Lindsey during Tusk for fear he would leave the band.
While Tusk is mostly praised today and it was a success selling over 4 million copies but in 1979 and 1980 it was called a bomb and a flop album by many critics which hurt the band and especially Lindsey. I love Tusk but my peeve is that is sort of ruined their rock chops since rock stations still shun most of the album. The part of not being commercial and being artists sort of went full circle because Mirage and Tango had so much pressure to be commercial. Its sort of mind blowing what would have happened to the band if Tusk was a Rumours 2.
