The stage was completely dark right before the intro, so John was probably backstage. Unless he was up in the rafters, monkeying around and swinging everywhere. See how this guy (not John) introduces Mac with the lights out and the band members taking their places?

Back in those days, the crew used to finish their setup with Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells” music (the theme from
The Exorcist) playing across the arena. It was very eerie. That’s how we always knew that Mac would take the stage in about ten minutes.
