I really don’t think that fear of Stevie kept John and Mick from touring with Christine and Lindsey. You said if the four of them had toured, they would have had to call it Fleetwood Mac… yet the four of them recorded the album, and they called it Buck/Vie, not Fleetwood Mac. They could have done the same with the tour.
There are two reasons I can think of that John and Mick didn’t join them on that tour- they didn’t want to because they knew it wouldn’t be as big a moneymaker without Stevie or they weren’t invited to. I’m not sure about John, but knowing Mick and his love for being on the road and making some money, any money, I have a hard time imagining he declined.
Something that just occurred to me… Lindsey said right around the time of the Dance that he was concerned that FM touring with REO Speedwagon and Pat Benatar might have damaged the legacy of FM. The same could be said of the band if they had concluded with the Buck/Vie album and tour. Playing casinos would not have been a high note for FM to go out on.
