At some point in the 90s touring was such a cash cow and it changed the music business. In the older days a big selling album yielded the same if not more than a tour. Those days are long gone.
My Wild Heart ticket cost almost as much as the album. Ticketmaster and other entities changed that. Most people prefer to go to summer amphitheaters and hear the same songs over and over again they can sing along to.
I heard Smokey Robinson say on Stern once that there are songs he has to do so they dont throw meat at him. Many performers get locked out of the creative process due to the big money machine.
