I’ve always said that the band made its best musical
and commercial decisions when it was self-managed. I also think that most of the crap they endured from each other in later years could have been worked through if they had still been self-managed. When everyone — especially Stevie — brought their entourage and “representation” along, it compromised internal decision-making, frustrated all of them, and soured everyone on wanting to work together. I saw it happen. It’s a shame, but nobody in the band cared enough to correct that problem and revert back to the five of them taking care of themselves.
