Can't comment on your friend but 30 million sounds about right for Neil. "Don't Dream It's Over" probably alone generates close to a million a year in royalties (as an example Sting recently said that he makes close to a million dollars a year in royalties from "Every Breath You Take") and Crowded House sold about 12 million albums thus far and had a bunch of big tours. And that doesn't include Split Enz and all of Neil's movie soundtrack deals.
The rate for songwriting royalties right now is nine cents per song. If he sold 12 million albums by TODAY’S rate, assuming he was the lone writer, and I believe writers get paid for 12 songs max per album (don’t quote me on that), he’d be worth $12.96 million. Not bad, but not $30 million.
