I think his skill at producing hit records gave him a lot of sway -- back when they were still making/selling lots of records. Given that Stevie won't make records with them, that reduced his clout on that front. Maybe she realized this, who knows?
If she suddenly wants to record again, as she's hinted, that would be perhaps a clue.
