That's what has always made this song such an interesting study in contrasts to me- the lyrics are about starting a new relationship, and Christine having to pinch herself because it's such a dream come true. Yet the music is positively mournful. I guess maybe that's the genius of the song, though- it's capturing the anxiety and obsession of a new relationship, and the reality that it might not work out.
I kinda like how different the final album cut and the live renditions are, though. The album version is so solemn- almost like a private prayer; yet the song onstage just totally taps into those explosive feelings. Such a great song.  |
Wow! I love this analysis. It's so spot on and I never thought about the mournfulness of the music. Yet, it so fits the Tusk concept and Lindsey's vision. Again, making me understand how this song starts the album.
