i had to laugh at your use of the word closet. you mean Nirvana covering in 1993, at the top of their fame and influence, a 1970 Bowie song is defined as a "closet fan"?

even Trent Reznor grew up on Bowie. (not grunge but 90s, and recorded and toured with Bowie towards the end of 90s, which of course most NIN fans didn't exactly appreciate. )

and then of course, Pumpkins and Hole covers of FM songs.
