What happened with Starship was this.
After 1984's Nuclear Furniture Paul Kanter left and then sued the other members to stop them from using the Jefferson Starship name. They were going to call themselves Starship Jefferson but settled on Starship. They recorded one album 1985's Knee Deep In The Hoopla which spawned two number 1 hits (We Built This City and Sara). After this album and tour Bassist Pete Sears left claiming he was embarrassed by the whole corporate rock thing they were doing now. The others continued on releasing 1987's No Protection with the number 1 hit Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now. During the tour Grace got sick with an ailment where she could not move part of her body so dates got cancelled.
In 88 Slick left the band and the remaining three recorded Wild Again for the movie Cocktail and then cut a new album in 89 called Love Among The Cannibals with a top 20 hit called It's Not Enough. During that tour Donny Baldwin the drummer and singer Mickey Thomas got into a big fight at a tour stop in Scranton, PA and Mickey's Face was busted up badly. Donny got fired and dates were rescheduled.
By 91 the band had released a GH album and their manager announced the band was over. Two Years later Mickey resurrected the name calling it Mickey Thomas Starship and now called Starship featuring Mickey Thomas. They still tour but the venues are small state fairs casinos rib fests corn roasts etc. Mickey is the only member still in the band from their heyday. He has a back up band and a girl singer who sings Grace's songs. In 2013 they released a new CD called Loveless Fascination.
In 87-88 Members of Jefferson Airplane/Starship were performing in a side band project and invited Grace to play on stage in 88. This led to a reunion of the Jefferson Airplane in 89 for a one off album and tour. The album was a not a big seller but the tour was a success.
In 1990 Grace retired and only occasionally has done anything musically. This includes recording backing vocals to a song on a Linda Perry album, rejoining Jefferson Starship twice to perform once in 96 and once in 2001.
In 2008, Slick contributed vocals to the hidden track (actually a previously unreleased 1970 outtake featuring Slick, Paul Kantner and Jack Traylor) of the latest Jefferson Starship release, Jefferson's Tree of Liberty. In 2010, Slick co-wrote Edge of Madness with singer Michelle Mangione to raise money for remediation efforts following the BP Oil Spill.[
Grace said the reason she stayed in the 80's was that she felt guilty for what she did in the 70's (showing up drunk being late or missing concerts etc) so she felt she owed them. The people behind Starship felt they needed to continue the hits that Jefferson Starship had so they brought in outside writers to give them hit singles.
I will say that some of the Starship music was awful but some of it was not that bad. There was much worse in the 80's IMO
