I'm certainly no doctor, but...
surely if you've smoked heavily all your life, by the time you reach that age it isn't going to make the blindest bit of difference to your future health whether you give up or not. The damage to your lungs in particular would be pretty much irreparable.
Arguably, a smoking addict giving up something they've relied on so much after such a long time would hit the body more and likely have a huge impact on the immune system.
