It depends on what type of colorectal cancer he had. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of MSI-H CRC, while alcohol intake increases the risk MSI-L CRC. According to Christine, he gave up drinking after the diagnosis. So, reading between the lines, his cancer was probably related more to his heavy alcohol use.
