The second night at Ziggo Dome was rather good. Gold Dust Woman was unexpectedly (for me) the highlight with the McVies doing very enjoyable extended jamming in that measured and low-key style of theirs. Christine's presence inevitably adds a lot, whether it's her taking the solo in Don't Stop or just sitting on the side chatting with John when Stevie is doing her Gypsy intro. And Songbird at the end should be mandatory at every FM concert. Nevermind the curfew.
I last saw them 12 years ago and while not much had changed, at least back then Stevie made some sort of attempt at the high vocal bits of certain old songs. Now she just dodged most of them. It's a very cliched complaint by now but it does tend to bother me a bit because those parts were intended as the climaxes of songs at the time. Gypsy in particular was lacking because of this.
A new album with some songs based on the instrumentalists' slow jams could really be something because that's where they seem the most comfortable. Though there will inevitably be some uptempo material, it wouldn't be FM otherwise.
Thanks to Mr. Shackin' Up for the small meet-up last night.
