Any discussion of the Top 100 ’90s Rock Albums will have to include some grunge, and this one is no different. A defining element of that decade, the genre (and the bands that rose to fame playing it) was given credit for revitalizing rock at a badly needed moment. That said, there’s far more to the story. Our list of the Top 100 ’90s Rock Albums, presented in chronological order, takes in the rich diversity of the period.
'Out of the Cradle'
Lindsey Buckingham (1992): For perhaps the only time ever, we learn what a Buckingham album sounds like without the threat of a concurrent Fleetwood Mac project cannibalizing its best, most listenable songs. He emerged with the greatest solo LP he's ever done, something that combines his flinty inventiveness with his perfect ear for a pop hook.
'The Dance'
Fleetwood Mac (1997): After a decade apart, Fleetwood Mac's most popular lineup (the one featuring Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks at its songwriting core) returned for a live run-through of their most famous songs. It's great hearing them play the hits together again, but Nicks' discarded 'Rumours'-era B-side "Silver Springs" is the highlight.
