Since reading this thread, I listened to the album version thrice and I have come to the conclusion that S&L are singing "
hangin' on to you".
This is the way I've always heard it and I will continue to do so until either Stevie or Lindsey says otherwise.
EDIT:
* The Glee directors might have been worried that "
hangin' on to you" might sound sexist like as if S&L have dependency problems or that a woman has to hang on to a man. It never came across as sounding that way to me.
